As cooler weather moves into Central Ohio, homeowners are thinking about getting exterior projects finished before winter. There is still time to schedule work, but the closer we get to winter, the more the weather influences what we can safely and properly complete.
At 4th Perry LLC, we believe an honest recommendation includes knowing when to move forward—and when waiting until spring is the better choice for your home.
Why Cold Weather Matters for Your Roof
Asphalt shingles become stiffer and more brittle as temperatures drop. That makes them more vulnerable to damage during handling, bending, and installation.
Shingles also depend on suitable warmth and sunlight to activate their factory-applied sealant. Extended cold weather can delay that bonding process, requiring additional precautions under the manufacturer’s instructions.
Cold-weather installation is possible in appropriate conditions. However, a dry afternoon alone does not tell the whole story. We also have to consider roof temperature, sunlight, frost, wind, and the forecast following installation.
Sometimes Spring Is the Better Investment
If your roof is keeping your home dry and an inspection shows it can reasonably remain in service through winter, waiting for more favorable spring conditions may be the best decision.
We would rather explain why a project should wait than rush an installation into unsuitable weather just to finish another job before the season ends.
There is no single calendar date that closes roofing season. The condition of your roof, the specific roofing materials, manufacturer requirements, and actual weather conditions should guide that decision.
A Leak Should Never Wait for Spring
Waiting on a planned replacement is different from ignoring an active problem.
If you notice water stains, missing shingles, loose flashing, or an active leak, schedule an inspection promptly. Depending on what we find, a repair or temporary weather protection may help protect your home until replacement conditions improve. Other roofs may need replacement sooner.
The first step is understanding the condition of your roof and what it needs to get through winter.
There Is Still Time to Plan Your Exterior Projects
As of October 29, our approximate scheduling windows are:
- Roofing: Two weeks out
- Siding: One month out
- Gutters: One week out
- Windows: One month out
These time frames depend on weather, material availability, and project scope. Scheduling now gives us time to inspect your home, discuss options, and determine whether a late-season installation or a spring project makes the most sense.
